August
9th, 2003 was the 12th annual Muskoka River Bathtub Derby. It was
originally scheduled for the second Saturday in July, but because
of rain it was delayed to the second Saturday in August. It was
a great day for spectators and racing as there was a lot of excitement
for everyone! Local businesses are invited to sponsor a tub and
participate in the pre-race parade and do their best to compete
in the race.
Muskoka
Motion sponsored a tub this year for the first time. The tub and
all the motors are supplied by the race organizers, but we are allowed
paint and decorate the tubs to our "team colours". But
all the motors are equal!
Here
is a collection of photos right from the beginning, including the
painting of the tub, to the parade and of course the race!
The tubs are 12 years
old and some have been used by previous sponsors (like ours was)
so the old paint was stripped off (left photo). You can see we had
a lot of work to do! We repainted it to a white base (center) with
a purple multi-tone paint. I was quite impressed with the finished
tub! Special thanks to Chad Mooney for the great paint job.
The pre-race
parade is always exciting to see all the tubs come into downtown
Huntsville. Our driver, Amy Davis, did very well in her heat. She
came from behind after a bad start and made it all the way up to
second place. But the excitement didn't end there! She only had
one obstacle to complete when the motor had problems! But she was
still in second... all the other tubs except ours and the leader
sank after they capsized! I want to thank Mandy Davis, Debi Davis,
John Davis and Barb Gillies for the hard work on the float.
Amy was allowed to race
again because the motor we were supplied with had problems. In her
second heat she did well, but still did not qualify for the final.
Thanks to Amy Davis for the fearless driving!
We are looking
forward to next year's Muskoka River Bathtub Derby on the second
Saturday in July!
